Black and White Together: The Search for Common Ground
Published in Paperback by Orbis Books (October, 1996)
Authors: Danny Duncan Collun and Danny Duncan Collum
Average review score:

Inspiring stories. A great read.
It's too bad these are "little-known" stories -- they just might change the way we understand race relations in this country. A living history from a insightful and compelling social analyst. Reads more like a novel than a history book.

Black Berry, Sweet Juice: On Being Black and White in Canada
Published in Hardcover by HarperFlamingo Canada (September, 2001)
Author: Lawrence Hill
Average review score:

Revolutionary thinking
Black Berry, Sweet Juice is "on being black and white in Canada"

I went into this book thinking it would be the same old race diatribes that I've been prone to my entire life. There should be equality between races, there is one race: human, etc. These are all things I believe, but are also fairly obvious, so everytime I read anything about race, I get frustrated by the same things being reitterated.

Lawrence Hill made me think of things that I hav never thought about before. He's well research, incredibly unbiased, recognizes that race IS an issue and that in order to abolish racism Canada must recognize that!

Insightful, well written, and well researched. A must for anyone, and a most definate must for any mixed race men and women.

Black Comedy, Including White Lies: Two Plays
Published in Hardcover by Stein & Day Pub (June, 1967)
Author: Peter, Shaffer
Average review score:

An absolutely hilarious play
I recently performed Black Comedy as part of a small, independant production group and believe me, it is FANTASTIC! The play is so funny, and it is chock full of little witty remarks. It has an amazingly clever premise, and is so much fun to do, we wanted to keep performing it! Shaffer is definately a master of Comedy.

Black Gloves, White Magic
Published in Paperback by The Nazca Plains Corporation (24 March, 2003)
Author: Tim Brough
Average review score:

Hot, hot, hot!! Stories really hold your interest.
Tim Brough has been writing for various gay fetish magazines over the years. He also helmed two of his own publications, the ground-breaking "Rubber Rebel" and "Vulcan America" magazines. Tim has also participated in all sorts of other exploits, including the infamous Rubber Buddha episode of HBO's SEXBYTES series. He has also frequently been invited to judge at the Cell Block Chicago's ongoing Mr. International Rubber competitions, as well as the recently-founded Mr. East Coast Rubber in NYC. He also appeared as Brutux Kahn in the Zeus/Can-Am production "Brutal Kombat." "Black Gloves, White Magic" is his first collection of stories.

While the twenty stories in this volume do have a decidedly kinky leaning, there are a few that don't veer off into the heavier areas of play. In particular, "The Forest Ranger" is almost new age in its description of sex in the great outdoors, and "Vanilla Extract" is a leather story through a Monty Python filter. The stories are also allowed to end on unexpected notes, motivated just as much by character as sex. The protagonists in "Blaine" debate the whys and hows of their lives and losses even as they engage in a heavy session, and the hallucinatory out-of-body experience described by the bottom during "Someday Never Comes" deals with the spirituality that kink enthusiasts sometimes share.

There is plenty of hard-core fantasy to be found here. Cops, truckers, municipal workers and magicians populate "Black Gloves, White Magic," but Tim also injects an understanding of the philosophy of kink and those men who inhabit the lifestyle that most writing in this field lacks.

This book is a must read for any guys into kink who like to use their brains, too!

Black Horse, White Rider
Published in Paperback by Aacorn Books (September, 2001)
Author: Jack R. Pyle
Average review score:

Ibsen, move over!
If you identified with Ibsen's "Hedda Gabler" and Nora in "A Doll's House" early feminist plays in which love alone promised a woman happiness and sin against one's society didn't count, you will love Black Horse White Rider. With historical accuracy, Jack R. Pyle's version pits funloving, teenage abolitionist Elizabeth Chadwycke, falling in love with and marrying philandering, southern plantation slaveholder, Clay Greenleaf. The pace is deadly as Clay slowly, steadily, passive aggressively, tethers his bride, until the leash is so short, she wonders if she controls even her own thoughts. Resistance carries a hefty legal price: Clay will get custody of their two daughters, whom he rarely sees and doesn't even like because they're not boys. When Elizabeth finally escapes with the girls, powerful Clay seeks revenge. The chase takes the reader through a labyrinth of surprises to an ending so rewarding (yet predictable), it couldn't be guessed! Don't miss this great read!

Black Justice in a White World: A Memoir
Published in Hardcover by Barricade Books (01 September, 1996)
Author: Bruce Wright
Average review score:

Drama, humor, poetry from an incredible man!
I have known Judge Bruce Wright for 38 years and the fact that my daughter and I are included in seven pages has not influenced this review. Yet, in this book I discovered many aspects of his life that I did not know. He has been a mentor to me, but he is the kind of man I wanted as a father. He has a sharp wit, yet writes tender poetry. Being an entertainment attorney for many years, he tells wonderful stories of many jazz greats and stories of the people he had to judge. A must read for those interested in the law, jazz, many wives, poetry served up with a wicked sense of humor, and strong opinions.

Black Lawyers, White Courts: The Soul of South African Law
Published in Hardcover by Ohio Univ Ctr for Intl Studies (December, 1999)
Authors: Kenneth S. Broun and Julius L. Chambers
Average review score:

Amazing but true--lawyers can be the good guys
This book captures the struggles of some of the real heroes of the anti-apartheid movement, the black lawyers of South Africa. From those who went from the cells of Robben Island to corporate boardrooms, to those who stood side by side with Nelson Mandela in court and now are judges, these amazing individuals used their smarts and savvy to tear down a corrupt system. These courageous individuals often used the very laws the apartheid government had devised to argue that the system was fundamentally corrupt. Although Professor Broun primarily let's his subjects tell their stories, using an oral history approach to their lives, the commentary he adds allows the reader to understand the background of these men and women and how they fit into the South African legal system. As an added bonus, the book contains a message from Nelson Mandela, South Africa's most famous lawyer. A must read for anyone interested in South Africa and for anyone who needs evidence that lawyers aren't always the bad guys.

Black Soldier, White Army : The 24th Infantry Regiment in Korea
Published in Paperback by Government Printing Office (July, 1996)
Author: William M. Hammond,George L. MacGarrigle William T. Bowers
Average review score:

This Book Should Be A Must Read, for HISTORIANS.
A FORGOTTEN BLACK WARRIOR, THAT'LL NEVER FORGET..

I volunteered and was shipped to Korea as a rifleman,to the 24th Infantry Regiment's 2nd Battalion, G-Company, 1st Platoon, 1st Squad. where I was to serve from Dec.4 1950 until Sept. 1st, 1951. The regiment originally known as the Buffalo Soldiers, and can truely state that it was one of the most outstanding combat units in the Korean War.

In my book WHAT'S A COMMIE EVER DONE TO BLACK PEOPLE?, I wrote of my experiences, it details the psychological effect of the war, on a 17-year-old kid, It also tells the story of a black man's fight in a racist United States army. A war where we black soldiers soon realized the bitter irony of our situation--supposedly fighting to protect the rights and freedom of an ethnic people, many of us had never heard of before; even as that freedom was denied us in our own country. My experience was a rude awakening to the realities, not only of life and death, but of politics. Writing this book was one of the most difficult decision of my life. But perhaps it along with books like, BLACK SOLDIER WHITE ARMY, will serve as an inspiration to other Black-veterans, to tell their stories, A TRUE STORY of our history. Reflecting back now, at age 66, and realizing the advancements we Americans, of African decent have made, I feel very proud of my participation; and privilege to share my experiences with the younger generation.. And Yes. perhaps, if I had known then at the ages 17, what I know now, I too might've stayed home and remained in school (war is not like those in movies). But I didn't. I chose the road of adventure, The Creator spared me, perhaps to add this chapter, to the history of African-Americans in the making of this our great country..

Hopefully BLACK SOLDIER WHITE ARMY will impress upon the now generation, that the freedom and opportunities we now enjoy, African Americans also fought and died for it. Freedom, indeed, was not Free..

PS; Even now, 49 years afterward, tears come to my eyes, when I recall comrades, Whites, Blacks, Reds & Yellows, that gave their very all..

Don't sleep on this one!
This book has changed my perspective on how we as Blacks relate to each other. It not only enhances self esteem, it also relates on a profound spiritual, psychological and emotional plane. This author pulls no punches when it comes down to being truthful and honest. I guarantee all who read this one will be changed for the better. I highly recommend it for everyone's home or school library!
